“O Flier” is the newest work to spring from the inspiration Richard MacDonald has found in the creative choreography and the artistic physicality of the extraordinary performers of Cirque du Soleil. This is a work to stir the imagination, as the finely observed anatomy underscores the performer’s humanity, her uncommon abilities place her outside the realm of our own experience, and she becomes exotic – otherworldly and mysterious.

Richard MacDonald presents the feminine form with a complexity and subtlety that adds to the high level of emotional drama inherent in his work. In “O Flier” there is a kinship that can be traced to Richard MacDonald’s renowned “Elena”. Both works contrast a sense of fragility and bird-like grace with the steely strength of a world-class athlete. Our eye follows the impossible curves of the performer’s body with wonder at the feat portrayed, but the very “uniqueness” of the posture takes our imagination far from the world of the everyday – it blurs the boundaries of humanity, and we think of an exotic, wild plumed creature.
